Auto parts and fear of the unknown!

  • Owning your car can be a wonderful experience. Every time you feel like it, you just get on and go wherever you want.
  • Cars represent freedom and spontaneity; they provide single people and families alike with the means to do what needs to be done, go where it is necessary to visit and return home again, all in a relatively simple and safe way.
  • Cars provide opportunities, save time, except when things break down, and you have to look for car parts.

Finding auto parts is not that difficult if you know what you are doing. Unfortunately, many of us do not. We know we should probably go back to the dealership where we bought the thing, but we have no idea what we would ask for. "The thing broke down in my car," we would say, and to avoid huge amounts of confusion, or just to get us out of the place, we stay at home or take the bus.

Looking at the bowels of a car is enough to make most of us fall asleep, or make the most sensitive wonder who the hell lets us go out with that gadget anyway. And although there is no doubt that the engine of a car is not a place for the mechanical beginner to break loose, there is little doubt that it is not as scary as it seems.

The fact that you drive it every day does not mean that you have to have a complex knowledge of the various parts that make up your car. You probably also use a computer and don't know a processor motherboard. But that's fine: you have many other skills, for which many mechanics would give you your right arm.

Maybe you are the best cook in the world, or you can knit faster than anyone you have ever known. It doesn't matter: auto parts are simply not your forte.

Therefore, when your car breaks down, don't worry about looking dark: your car is a convenience, and you're not supposed to understand all its weaknesses.

When you go to the garage or the dealer for repairs or to buy spare parts, simply be as accurate as possible about what happened. Take a look inside by all means and try to find a visual signal that can help your mechanic understand what you are looking for.

But don't worry about your lack of knowledge of auto parts. Ask your mechanic to choose a pair of knitting needles, and we'll see who knows what.
